It is the dream of every Indian to go to Switzerland once in their lifetime. The credit for this goes to Bollywood and YRF. My trip to Switzerland will always be extremely special to me. Apart from going to my dream destination, it was also my first ever International trip. The firsts are always special, aren’t they?
I went to Interlaken in December 2019 with my family. We had never experienced snowfall and extreme weather condition so we knew we were in for a real treat. The highlight of our trip was Jungfraujoch- The Top Of Europe.
In this blog, I will tell you about my experience of going to the top of Europe.
One Day Before Prep Session
You won’t hear this many but it is very important to check the temperature of Jungfraujoch one day in advance, especially if you are travelling in December. Buy the ticket on the day of your trip and not before. Many a time, Jungfrau is shut for tourists in extreme weather conditions.
We travelled to Jungfraujoch from Interlaken OST. I highly recommend getting the Swiss pass on your trip to Switzerland to save extra bucks on transportation. I paid 118 francs per ticket as I had a Swiss pass. Otherwise, the cost of the ticket is 184 francs.
It is safe to say that some people enjoy their train journey towards Jungfraujoch more than the final destination. I am one of those people. The seats are very comfortable and the windows are huge. This makes for an even better experience.
The route of the journey is as follows:
You catch the train from Interlaken West to Interlaken Ost, then to Lauterbrunnen, then to Kleine Scheidegg, then to Jungfraujoch. This sounds like a hassle but it’s not. The process of changing trains is simple and takes just a minute. Trains run on time here and the whole process is hassle-free.
Imagine going to the top of Europe through the mountains with the majestic view of mountains. For a mountain lover like me, it was a treat to my eyes. The temperature on that day was -18 degrees and it was airy.
It is called the top of Europe as all the other mountains look tiny from Jungfraujoch. Unfortunately, the temperature got extreme and the visibility started becoming low on the day we went here. The snow pierced through our soul and I could feel every inch of ice touching my skin. It was an experience in itself. I wish we could see the glaciers and mountains too, that was a flip side.
Hence, as I said above, I highly recommend checking the temperature before going here as it is quite an expensive affair. If you have days to choose from, you can go ahead with the one at better temperatures.
There are many attractions in Jungfraujoch for your day trip. You can visit the chocolate museum, ice palace and Sphinx observatory.
- There are many restaurants and cafe up there. The prices are a little too steep but the food is delicious.
- Keep your ID and tickets handy all the time on the train.
- Sit on the right side of the train while going up. The view is better 😉
- Keep your camera ready but make sure to enjoy the views uninterrupted with your bare eyes too!
